Michelle Mohammed

Committed to storytelling that bridges borders and nurtures a more empathetic global culture, Michelle Mohammed is a Toronto-based artist working both nationally and internationally as an actor, director, and arts leader.
Known for her depth, precision, and fearlessness as an actor, Michelle brings a compelling, grounded presence to leading and complex roles.
Michelle collaborates with many of Canada’s most acclaimed artists, companies, and productions, placing her at the forefront of the country’s professional performing arts.
She is currently working as an Associate Artist at Why Not Theatre, a leading international theatre company based in Toronto, where she previously served as Associate Artistic Director and contributed to landmark projects including Mahabharata.
She recently starred as Munni in the Canadian premiere of Anusree Roy’s Trident Moon at Crow’s Theatre & The National Arts Centre and portrayed Des in Yerma, alongside Sarah Gadon, at Coal Mine Theatre while assistant directing The Hooves Belonged to the Deer at Tarragon Theatre.
Internationally, Michelle participated in the Theatertreffen International Forum (Berlin, Germany 2025), a prestigious residency for the world’s most exciting emerging theatre-makers, and she recently worked with Katie Mitchell at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (London, United Kingdom 2024).
In addition to performance, Michelle has worked as a director and assistant director with leading Canadian companies such as Why Not Theatre, Nightwood Theatre, and the Shaw Festival. She is also a frequent guest artist, facilitator, and adjudicator across Canada.
Driven by the belief that theatre, film, and television can interrogate humanity’s complexities, Michelle’s multifaceted practice continues to expand artistic boundaries while cultivating transformative experiences for audiences and collaborators alike.

Michelle participates as a director in Why Not Theatre’s 2024 ThisGen Fellowship, a national initiative that supports BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) women and non-binary theatre artists get to the next stage in their careers through paid training, mentorship, hands-on residencies and labs, and peer-to-peer connection.
TORONTO, CANADA | 2024
Michelle is granted the highly competitive Metcalf Performing Arts Internship to train in Artistic Direction with Ravi Jain and Miriam Fernandes at Why Not Theatre.
Michelle will develop her skills as an artistic director interested in challenging the status quo of Canadian theatre-making. She will also explore the main roles and responsibilities of an artistic director, balancing artistic practice and leadership responsibilities, and gain an understanding of the artistic director role in relation to other departments of an organization.
